How could I forget?

02/26/2009

I saw The Wrestler the other day with Brian. It is one of the saddest films I’ve seen in a very long time.

Randy ‘The Ram’ is a pathetically sympathetic character who we often love, and often hate. He is selfish, needy, and alone, and wants the world to forgive him his wrong doings. We want him to get his life back on track, and feel sorry for him. We laugh at his deli counter niceties, and close our eyes/hold our bodies during his wrestling matches. He is a weak and extremely vulnerable old man outside the ring, but a god of champions inside. His relationship with his daughter is heart wrenching, and his relationship with Pamela  is frustrating. This film brings a discourse on what it means to be human, and seems to reaffirm that the answer is love and acceptance.
